Tour Description

An excellent trip that gives you the chance to paddle in one of the most amazing coastlines of Crete including the coast next to the famous Samaria gorge. The scenery of the trip is outstanding. We will visit some beaches that for years been in the top 50 in the world in various travel guides like the Lonely planet and Tripadvisor. Not to be missed.

Overnight in tents but if you prefer the luxury of a bed then it will be possible most of the months for an extra fee. The listed price does not include accommodation. Price for accommodation is usually between 35 to 50 euros (the price is based on double occupancy).

If you do prefer to stay in small apartments please be sure you will be in touch with us the earliest possible as the availability in rooms are very limited during May to September.

EXPERIENCE NEEDED: LIMITED

The whole trip is about 80km. This equates to about 20km/day in 4 days.

You need to have some previous experience in sea kayaks and especially to be able to track the kayak in a straight line.

Participants without any experience are recommended to join a 2 days sea kayaking course (extra 150€ per person for 2 days) prior to taking this trip.

Notes: We will meet near the city of Heraklion between 8-9 am. You should arrive in Heraklion the day before. If you find a cheaper flight to the airport in Chania then the best will be to meet us direct to the starting point as from there is about an hour and 45 minutes by a bus while from Heraklion about 3 hours. If you do travel from Heraklion and you need a transfer that is provided for free. On the last day of the trip, we will return back to Heraklion by our car and will be glad to drop you in the airport if your flight is on the same date. Your flight needs to be late enough as we need about 3 hours to get there from the place that will finish our sea kayak trip. The best place to fly to is Heraklion airport as it is much easier from there to deal with transport.

CAMPING & FOOD

The expedition is self catering. Usually we each look after our own breakfast, lunch and snacks and prepare a group evening meal in turn.

We will buy 2 days worth of food and water at the beginning as there we will be able to restock during the route.

Meals in seaside towns, or beach side taverna's, are possible during the whole trip.  Usually we prepare our own breakfast & dinner and have lunch in a taverna.

During off season (late October to late April) we will need carry more supplies and wont be possible to eat in a taverna as all are closed.

CAN I RENT ALL CAMPING EQUIPMENT?

We can provide all the equipment for camping apart from the sleeping bag for an extra cost. You can get a high quality 3 or 4 season tent for an extra 30€ for the whole duration of the trip and also the mattress. The stove (complete set from Trangia) and gas canister are an extra 30€ and are suitable for 2-3 persons.

WHEN IN YOUR OPINION IS A GOOD TIME TO DO THE EXPEDITION?

All year long as this particular trip is located on a very protected area. Usually the roughest sea is during January and February as it is common during those months to have strong south winds which bring big waves.
