Booking Notes
*Thank you for joining Sydney Kayak on an overnight adventure.
Your guide and cook for this adventure is Sam Mcleod*
Schedule: Day 1
Meet at the boat ramp in the Tallowah Dam Picnic Area at 9.30am
Please be on time. We will pack the Kayaks, have a safety and paddle technique
briefing and plan to be on the water by 10.15.
Depending on the ability of the group we usually stop for lunch around midday.
After a leisurely lunch we have another couple of hours paddling to the
campsite. There are numerous places to camp and are on a “first come best
dressed” basis.
Once we have chosen a site and set up camp there is time for relaxation and a
swim. This is also a good time to gather firewood.
Dinner is usually served at dusk
Schedule: Day 2
After breakfast we will pack up and reverse the path from day 1.
Depending on the group and wind we are usually back at the carpark early to
mid afternoon.
##What is supplied:
Sydney Kayak supplies the kayaks and kayaking equipment, Tents, sleeping
mat and camping equipment, Food Drink, Wine and Beer. Sunscreen.
##What to bring:
You should bring at least 1ltr of water per day, a change of clothes in case you
get wet, a warm top in case of a cool evening, a small bag of toiletries.
Sleeping bag. (If you need one please let us know)
Space is extremely limited. Kayak openings are around 20cm so soft bags are
best.
You can bring phones and Cameras but remember there is a risk as they don’t
float and usually don’t work if dropped in water. For anything with a touch
screen it is a good idea to have a small cloth to wipe drops from wet fingers off
the screen as they can be sensed as a finger touch and make use difficult.
Anything you don’t want to get wet should be in plastic.
##What to wear:
Paddling is a water sport so expect to get splashed.
Your feet will get wet. Footwear is strongly recommended.
The clothing Golden Rules - your kayak clothing should:
- NO COTTON or DENIM - when it gets wet, it does not dry and
remains cold and heavy! NOT EVEN JOCKS or socks!
- When wet your clothing must stay warm AND dry quickly!
- The key concept to bear in mind is layering. Several thin garments will
keep you just as warm as a single thicker one, and are much more
versatile. Remember you’ll need to think about staying cool as much as
staying warm, and you can always add or subtract layers.
- A light Nylon Jacket will keep out wind and water. Fleeces are OK.
Avoid heavy Jackets
##What to expect:
You will be paddling on the stunningly beautiful Lake Yarrunga, formed by the
Tallowah Dam.
Phone reception is non-existent on most of the lake.
There are only two National Park toilets so most camp sites are find a private
spot and dig a hole (shovel will be provided).
We will be doing several hours of paddling each day though it is not strenuous.
Most people of average fitness who are non paddlers find they are tired but not
shattered. You are in doubles so you can share the workload.
##Weather cancellation:
In the event of bad weather (rain or high winds) A decision will be made the
evening 36 hours before the paddle so for a Saturday paddle the decision will be
made Thursday evening. If you don’t receive a call or txt its going ahead.
##Directions:
Tallowa Dam is about 160 kilometres drive from Sydney. From Sydney, follow
the Hume Highway (F5) south towards Goulburn and take the Mittagong to
Bowral turnoff. Take Nowra Road towards Kangaroo Valley. Continue across
Hampden Bridge in Kangaroo Valley, and turn right onto Mt Scanzi Road.
Follow the road about 20 kilometres straight down to the dam.
