WHERE TO MEET:
Your captain will meet you 10 minutes before your scheduled sail time in the Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina at the top of “C” dock by the picnic tables. It is located in front of the Marina Cafe and the Yard Office at 2732 Washington St Port Townsend WA 98368 (GPS: 48.10675, -122.77731)
Turn into the Boatyard from the traffic light at Haines Pl and Hwy 20/Sims Way (intersection with the Safeway store and Mcdonald’s), then drive straight until you reach the waterfront. Turn left and park anywhere along the waterfront, or in the large lot just past the restrooms. We will be waiting in a yellow life jacket at the top of C dock by the picnic tables. Please do not go down to the boat unescorted or early as we will be preparing for your trip.
PARKING:
There is public parking available in the port anywhere along the waterfront, in front of the marina, and a larger lot down at the end past the restrooms by the boat ramp.
RESTROOMS:
Public Restrooms are available in the port at 2732 Washington St. They are in a building with skylights that is next to the Yard Office.
Our restroom code is 5680# — make sure to include the #. Please do not share this code with others.
We recommend you use the restroom before your sail. We do have a marine portapotty onboard if nature calls, but shore side facilities are always much easier and more user friendly.
GETTING HERE:
If you are coming from points east and plan to cross the Hood Canal Bridge, we recommend getting to Port Townsend at least an hour before your scheduled trip start time. Often during summer months the bridge will open for vessel traffic and cause delays of over an hour! [wsdot.com](https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/hoodcanalbridgestatus)
If you are planning to drive across on the Port Townsend – Whidbey Island Ferry we recommend making a reservation as sailing space for cars is limited and often full. [secureapps.wsdot](https://secureapps.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Reservations/Vehicle/default.aspx)
If you are driving up from the Portland area, we recommend you take HWY 101 up the eastern side of the Olympic Peninsula. Not only is it a much more scenic and fun drive, you won’t potentially get stuck if the Hood Canal Bridge opens!
WHAT TO BRING:
Please dress for the weather and bring an additional layer or two because it is always a bit chillier when sailing out on the water. It is recommended to bring sunglasses and wear comfortable, closed toed shoes. Most shoes and sandals will be fine, but if you arrive in heels or other potentially dangerous footwear we may ask you to go barefoot for safely boarding and moving about the vessel. We have life jackets for everyone, binoculars, sunscreen, light snacks, and bottled water aboard. Please feel free to bring your own beverages or snacks.
WHAT NOT TO BRING:
Sail Port Townsend is a drug free and smoke free vessel. No illegal drugs or legal marijuana are allowed on the boat at all. There is also no smoking or vaping allowed on the boat.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We will meet at the top of C dock 10 minutes before your sail time; this will give us time to make our way down to the boats, sign the release form, and get everyone fitted for life jackets. We require everyone coming for a sail with Sail Port Townsend to have the ability to safely participate in sailing activities. Life jackets are required to be worn while on the boat, but it is ok if you wish to briefly take off your life jacket for pictures. After everyone is in life jackets we will help you board the boat. After getting everyone on board and all carry-on items stowed, we will give a thorough safety orientation and head out away from other boats to raise our sails. While sailing, the boat may heel, or lean to the side — this is a normal and safe part of operation as we catch the wind to propel the sailboat. We will spend your time sailing around Port Townsend Bay, looking for wildlife, taking in the sights, and learning about the area. After just under two hours we will start the motor, lower and store the sails, and head back to the dock where we will disembark at the scheduled trip end time. A 10% to 20% gratuity for the crew is appreciated and recommended upon disembarking the boat for a day of well enjoyed sailing!
WEATHER
On the website we have done our best to describe the typical summer conditions of Port Townsend Bay. Those are just general wind patterns and they vary quite a bit day to day. It is an uncommon occurrence to have to cancel a sail, but it is a possibility I want you to be aware of when booking. Morning sails are more likely to have not enough wind, while afternoon sails can get cancelled for too much wind, and sometimes it’s the other way around! We never know what we will really get until the day of!
Captain reserves the right to cancel any trip at any time for any reason. Sailing is dependent on the weather, and this is something we cannot control. If the weather forecast looks to be unfavorable, we will try to let you know a day in advance, but most weather decisions must be made day of sailing as the forecast can change drastically day to day. We work hard to make sure that when you go sailing with us, it is a wonderful day out on the water! Trips may be cancelled if the wind is blowing too strong for our sailing tours. If there is not enough wind to sail, the captain will offer to cancel the trip at no charge or give you the option to get out on the water and motor around Port Townsend Bay taking in the sights.
THANKS AGAIN,
We are excited to meet you and go sailing!
