About
ASA 101 is a 2-day course running from 9:30am–4:30pm. Each day begins with about an hour of classroom time to introduce or review core concepts, followed by on-the-water instruction aboard our 36’ sailboat. Students rotate between skipper and crew while learning sailing terminology, boat parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship, and essential safety—including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. The course also includes access to a free Intro to Sailing online video. By the end of the second day, you'll be confidently steering a 36’ sailboat under power and sail and fully prepared for the ASA 101 certification exam.
Students may also add an optional Intro to Sailing session during checkout. This half-day course takes place the afternoon before ASA 101 and offers extra hands-on practice with knots, terminology, and basic boat handling—ideal for those wanting extra time with the basics or anyone looking for a more relaxed start.

IMPORTANT: You will receive a textbook in the mail. Please review your textbook and/or the Intro to Sailing online course [CLICK HERE FOR ONLINE SAILING COURSE](https://learn.americansailing.com/p/intro-to-sailing?coupon_code=ASA0991SASA). You are not required to complete the online course- it is an optional resource designed to help prepare you for the 101. The book is also an excellent resource for familiarizing yourself to the material prior to arriving to class. PREPARATION IS KEY! Please review as much of the material as possible prior to arriving to class. FYI the quizzes at the end of each section in the book are fill-in-the blank style, making them quite difficult. Don't be intimidated- the actual certification exam is multiple choice! There is also an ASA Sailing Challenge app that is a great way to familiarize yourself with sailing concepts. We HIGHLY recommend taking advantage of these resources to prepare yourself for the course.
Bring plenty of warm clothes. Consider bringing sailing gloves (or something similar) for handling lines. Layers are great as the temperature and wind chill can vary greatly throughout the day. It’s much better to have extra layers than not enough. Plan to wear close-toed shoes. Bring your own snacks, lunch and drinks. The Local in Irvington is a great spot to pick up coffee, drinks and lunch. We have filtered water available but please bring your own water bottle. During lessons, the sailboat does not have a sun cover on, so please bring sunscreen, hats, sun shirts, etc. We have basic self-inflating PFD’s for you to use. If you have your own your are welcome to bring that. You will only be asked to wear a PFD if conditions warrant (over 15kts of wind or low visibility).
Cancellation Policy
Courses canceled due to named storms or otherwise extreme weather will be rescheduled or fully refunded. We offer free cancellation within 48 hours of booking. After that period, cancellations for any reason will forfeit a 50% deposit.
