Venice is magical from land—but experiencing it from a kayak during one of the most famous non-competitive regattas in the world is something else entirely. This year, our group of around ten kayakers had the privilege of taking part in the legendary Vogalonga Regatta, and it turned into an unforgettable paddling adventure.
From Parking Lot to the Grand Stage of Venice
Our journey began early, at a parking area on the outskirts of Venice. From there, we loaded our kayaks and set off paddling toward the city, slowly entering the maze of canals that makes Venice so unique. The atmosphere was calm but buzzing with anticipation—every paddle stroke brought us closer to the heart of the city and the historic St. Mark’s Square.
As we reached the starting area near Piazza San Marco, we waited in the canal while hundreds of other boats, kayaks, and traditional Venetian vessels gathered around us. Floating there, surrounded by paddlers from all over the world, we felt the excitement building. This wasn’t a race—it was a celebration of human-powered boats, tradition, and community.
Vogalonga: 30 Kilometers of Pure Paddling Joy
When the regatta officially started, Venice came alive. We paddled together as a group, moving through wide canals, narrow waterways, and open lagoon sections. The energy was incredible—colorful boats everywhere, spectators cheering from bridges, and the rhythmic sound of paddles hitting the water.
The Vogalonga course is about 30 kilometers long, and when you add the distance from our parking point to the start and back, we covered nearly 35 kilometers in total. It was physically demanding, but never boring. Every turn revealed a new view, a new stretch of water, or another smiling paddler sharing the same experience.
Halfway through the regatta, a welcome refreshment stop awaited us. We grabbed fresh fruit and water, recharged our energy, and exchanged a few laughs before getting back into our kayaks. That short break made all the difference and reminded us how well organized and paddler-friendly the event truly is.
Medals, Memories, and That Venetian Feeling
Crossing the finish line brought a mix of exhaustion and pure happiness. After hours on the water, we were rewarded not only with a sense of achievement but also with Vogalonga medals—a small but meaningful reminder of what we had just accomplished.
The experience didn’t start on race day, though. On Saturday, the day before the regatta, we visited the Vogalonga office to collect our starter packs. Walking through Venice that day, knowing what awaited us on Sunday, added another layer of excitement. Everything felt special—from the organization to the people, the city, and the shared passion for paddling.
Why Vogalonga Is a Must for Kayakers
Vogalonga is not about winning. It’s about respecting tradition, protecting Venice from motorized traffic, and enjoying the city the way it was meant to be experienced—by paddle. For kayakers, it’s a rare chance to glide through Venice alongside thousands of like-minded water sports enthusiasts.
For us at Paddle Booking, this regatta perfectly represents what paddling adventures are all about: connection, movement, culture, and unforgettable moments on the water. Venice gave us tired arms, big smiles, and memories we’ll be talking about for a long time.
If you ever get the chance to paddle Vogalonga—take it. Trust us, Venice from a kayak is something you’ll never forget.
