Our journey to the Padova Water Marathon began the way every great paddling adventure should.
Our journey to the Padova Water Marathon began the way every great paddling adventure should—with a group of passionate water sports lovers, united by a shared love for kayaking. Early in the morning, we gathered, loaded our kayaks onto the trailer, and set off toward Padua (Padova), a beautiful Italian city where this unique marathon takes place right in the heart of the urban waterways.
Arrival in Padua and Race Preparation
Once we arrived in Padua, the organization immediately made a great impression. We picked up our starter packs, which included a high-quality and beautifully designed event T-shirt, along with a refreshing drink—small details that make participants feel truly welcome.
With kayaks ready and gear checked, we made our way to the water. The excitement grew as the start announcements echoed around us. When our category was called, we launched and prepared ourselves for the challenge ahead: approximately 20 kilometers of paddling, split evenly between downstream and upstream sections.
First 10 Kilometers: A Paddle Through the City’s Soul
The first half of the marathon took us 10 kilometers downstream, straight through the historic center of Padua. This stretch was without a doubt the highlight of the race. Paddling through narrow canals, beneath bridges, and past centuries-old buildings, we felt as if we were gliding through history itself. The city revealed its most beautiful side from the water—something you can only truly experience from a kayak.
Along the route, there were two points where paddlers exit the water. The first was near a stronger rapid, a spot not everyone feels confident crossing, so portaging the kayaks there is mandatory. The second exit point offered something every paddler appreciates—refreshments. Here, we stopped briefly to eat, drink, and recharge before continuing the journey.
The Return Upstream: A Different Kind of Challenge
After the refreshment break, we turned around and began the upstream section, another 10 kilometers back. Compared to the vibrant and dynamic city center, this part felt calmer and more repetitive, but not without its own charm. Paddling against the current requires more focus and strength, turning this half into a true endurance test.
What made it special, though, was the scenery—we paddled alongside Padua’s riverside promenades, watching locals walk, relax, and enjoy their day. It created a peaceful rhythm, reminding us that not every challenge needs noise and excitement to be meaningful.
Medals, Lunch, and the Perfect Ending
Crossing the finish line brought a shared sense of achievement. Every participant received a medal, a symbol of effort, persistence, and love for paddling. To top it all off, the organizers invited us to a post-race lunch, giving everyone the chance to relax, share stories, and relive the best moments of the day.
Afterward, it was time for goodbyes. Kayaks were packed, tired arms rested, and one by one, everyone headed home—taking with them great memories from a city experienced in the most authentic way possible: from the water.
