When Daytona Lights Up: Paddle Through a Glowing River After Dark

Daytona Beach is famous for sunshine, ocean waves and long days by the Atlantic.

But when the sun disappears, another side of Daytona begins to glow.

Away from the busy beach and bright oceanfront, the Halifax River becomes calm. The sky darkens. City lights begin reflecting across the water. Boats become fewer, the sounds of the day fade away, and suddenly the river feels like a completely different place.

Then your paddleboard lights up.

Beneath your feet, powerful LED lights illuminate the water, creating a glowing window into the river below.

Welcome to one of Daytona Beach’s most unusual nighttime adventures.

See Daytona From a Side Most Visitors Miss

Most people experience Daytona Beach from the sand, the boardwalk or behind the wheel.

Very few see it from the middle of the Halifax River after dark.

As you paddle away from the launch, the familiar city begins to look different.

Bridges stretch across the dark water. Waterfront buildings glow in the distance. Lights from Beach Street shimmer across the surface of the river.

And instead of watching Daytona from the shore, you’re floating quietly through the middle of it.

There’s something special about seeing a city from the water at night.

Everything feels slower.

Quieter.

Almost cinematic.

Then the Water Beneath You Starts to Glow

The real magic begins when you look down.

These aren’t ordinary paddleboards.

Specially designed Galactic Glide LED-lit paddleboards illuminate the water directly beneath you as you move across the Halifax River.

Suddenly, the darkness below becomes visible.

Fish may dart through the illuminated water.

Shadows move beneath your board.

Every paddle stroke sends small ripples through the glowing surface.

It feels less like a traditional sightseeing tour and more like floating above your own underwater world.

And because every night on the river is different, you never quite know what might appear in the light.

Who Is Swimming Beneath You?

The Halifax River is part of a living coastal ecosystem, which means your nighttime paddle can come with unexpected visitors.

Fish are often the easiest to spot as they swim through the light beneath the boards.

But keep looking around.

You may see birds settling along the shoreline or a turtle appearing near the surface.

And if you're particularly lucky, you might even spot one of Florida's most exciting residents:

a dolphin moving through the river.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed — and that's exactly what makes them exciting.

Out here, you’re not visiting an aquarium.

You’re entering their world.

A Different Kind of Night Out in Daytona Beach

There are plenty of ways to spend an evening in Daytona.

You can have dinner.

Walk along the beach.

Explore the nightlife.

Or you can step onto an illuminated paddleboard and spend the next 90 minutes gliding beneath the stars.

The Night Glow Paddle Tour combines several experiences in one:

nature, wildlife, city views, gentle adventure and the simple feeling of being out on the water after everyone else has gone home.

It can be peaceful one moment and exciting the next.

And perhaps the best part is that you don't need to be an experienced paddleboarder to enjoy it.

Never Paddleboarded Before? That's Okay.

The experience is designed for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Before entering the water, your guide provides an on-shore tutorial so you can become comfortable with the board, paddle and basic techniques.

Your equipment is provided, including:

  • Paddleboard
  • Paddle
  • Life vest
  • On-shore instruction
  • Professional human tour guide

Life jackets are required, so knowing how to swim isn't necessary to participate.

Groups are kept to up to 10 people, helping the experience feel more personal and allowing the guide to stay connected with everyone on the water.

Guests from 8 to 80 years old can participate, although anyone under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Imagine This…

You arrive just before sunset.

The heat of the Florida day is beginning to disappear.

Your guide meets you at the boat ramp and introduces you to the equipment.

A few minutes later, you're standing on your board.

You push away from shore.

Daytona slowly lights up behind you.

Then your board begins glowing beneath the water.

You paddle.

A fish suddenly crosses through the beam below your feet.

Someone in the group points toward the shoreline.

Maybe it's a bird.

Maybe a turtle.

Maybe something larger moving through the river.

Above you are the stars.

Ahead of you are the lights of Daytona.

Below you is a glowing river.

For the next hour and a half, the city feels very far away — even though you're paddling right through the heart of it.

Before You Go

The Night Glow Paddle Tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours and departs from:

115 East Orange Avenue
Daytona Beach, FL 32114

Free parking is available at the boat ramp.

Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour so you have enough time to meet your guide and prepare before entering the water.

Bring swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes and water shoes or sandals.

One important nighttime detail: restroom facilities are not available at the launch after dark, so it's best to plan ahead.

Transportation, food and drinks are not included.

Ready to See Daytona Glow?

Some Daytona memories happen on the beach.

Others happen when the beach is behind you, the city lights are reflecting across the Halifax River and the water beneath your feet suddenly begins to glow.

If you're looking for something different to do after sunset — something peaceful, adventurous and distinctly Florida — this is one night on the water you may remember long after your vacation ends.
