Safety & Comfort for Winter Kayaking
Cold-weather kayaking in Alaska requires the right gear and training for safety. We provide wetsuits that must be worn at all times while on the water. Winter water temperatures are extremely cold and can be dangerous if you fall in. The wetsuit helps retain body heat and delay hypothermia until we can get you warm and dry.
For added safety, each guide carries a dedicated hypothermia kit, and our kayaks are extra wide and low to the water—making them stable and difficult to tip over. These precautions ensure you can relax and focus on the beauty of the experience.

Important Information
Cold Water Acknowledgement and Exposure Suit Policy
The trip you have selected includes paddling through sections of cold water, defined as water temperatures below 55°F. Please read and acknowledge the associated risks of cold water immersion and your decision regarding the use of an exposure suit.
Wetsuits are available upon request but must be reserved in advance.
The kayaks we use for guided trips are designed for stability—with a wide body and a low center of gravity—making them highly resistant to tipping. However, as with any water activity, there is always a possibility of falling into the water. This policy exists to inform you of that risk and to give you the opportunity to choose the level of protection that’s right for you.
By participating in this trip, you are acknowledging these risks and assuming personal responsibility for your decision to use—or not use—an exposure suit.
# Policy and assumption of risk for Cold Water and Wetsuit/Drysuit Use
At Adventures by True North AK, your safety is our top priority. Some of our guided paddling trips take place in cold water environments, and we want every guest to be informed and prepared for the conditions.
Understanding the Risk
Cold water immersion presents serious risks, including hypothermia. Even in summer, Alaska’s waters remain cold enough to cause rapid heat loss. Proper thermal protection—such as a wetsuit or drysuit—can greatly reduce these risks.
Exposure Suit Availability
We have a limited supply of wetsuits available upon request. If you would like one, please let us know in advance so we can ensure proper fit and availability.
Guest Assumption of Risk
While we strongly recommend the use of exposure protection (wetsuit or drysuit) during cold water activities, guests may choose whether or not to wear a wetsuit. By choosing to forgo the use of an exposure suit, you acknowledge and accept the risks associated with cold water immersion.
Acknowledgement and Waiver
All guests are required to sign a waiver before participating in our guided paddling trips. This waiver includes a section where you acknowledge the risks of cold water immersion and choose to participate anyway.
Guides' Discretion for Safety
In extreme weather, high winds, or particularly cold conditions, our guides may require the use of an exposure suit to ensure trip safety. We reserve the right to alter or cancel trips if conditions present undue risk to participants and guides
