From the historic Okarito Wharf, your two hour EcoTour aboard the Explorer Douglas, begins with Paula & Swade of Okarito Boat Tours. You'll see and learn about the incredible variety of bird life on this outstanding waterway system, from the legendary kotuku - great white herons, to the migratory godwits, and so much more. Up in the rainforest waterways, you may see seasonal perching orchids, rata flowering, clematis and forest birds - and sometimes kotuku feeding along the channels. Learn what inspired us to launch the Okarito Plant Project - what it is, why and how it is helping all of our communities and how your participation in this tour contributes too!
Back at the Wharf, your guide with Glacier Valley EcoTours will meet you and show you our restoration area. Over the years, we have been slowly and steadily removing invasive weeds and replanting with the eco-sourced native trees from our Native Plants Trust that we manage together. Then on into the enchantment of the Okarito rainforest to see the plants- from the miniature carniverous sundews to the towering kahikatea and the birds of the forest. More info
