Canoe/kayak, paddles, buoyancy aids, car transfer to agreed put-in point with equipment, and from take-out point. Guided trips include an experienced guide, meals, & accommodation overnight at our wilderness hut on the 2-day option.
This source of this gentle beginner's river is near the Norwegian border but most people paddle a 38km section between Kalmakaltio and Siltakoski through the Saaravuoma-Koskisenvuoma marshland protection area on the south-eastern side of the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area. The river drops only 25m in altitude along its 38km length and provides easy paddling from early summer to August.
The journey can be completed in one long day by experienced paddlers. However, for most people it is a more enjoyable 2-day (or 3-day with children) trip with an overnight in a wilderness cabin.
The Kalmakaltio open wilderness hut and Nallatupa are on the banks of the River Käkkälöjoki.
Kalmakautio can be reached by driving 14.5km along a dirt road from the village of Nunnanen (which is c.20km from the main Peltovuoma road and the standard take-out at Siltakoski).
Those who want to extend their journey can do so by continuing on for a further 27km from Siltakoski to Ketomella although it is worth noting that this section includes the Haarakoski Rapids at the junction of the Käkkälöjoki and Ounasjoki rivers.
As always, the guided price for the 38km journey includes the rent of the canoe, paddle and buoyancy aid, transfer to the put-in transfers, food, guiding and hut accommodation when the trip is being made across two days.
The facilitated journey prices include map support, canoe and kit hire and transfers to the put-in and take-out.

# RENTAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Rental prices are charged in advance.
To rent equipment from us, you need to present an ID and provide contact details.
The renter is obliged to return the rental equipment at the end of the rental period. Late returns will incur an additional charge according to the price list.
The use of rental equipment is always at the tenant's own risk.
The condition of the equipment is always checked before rental and upon return.
The renter undertakes to return the equipment in the condition in which it was when rented and, if necessary, to replace the damaged parts or equipment.
We also charge the renter for the cost of the repair itself.
Lost / non-returned items incur the full cost of the replacement of that item.
This message confirms the rental contract for the time specified.
# RIVERS
We are happy to give advice about suitable paddling rivers (and put-in and take-out options) in the region. Renters obviously need to follow any suggested itinerary at their own risk and agree not to hold Hetta Huksies responsible for personal injury, property damage, death resulting from accidents, loss or delay in any means of transportation or by reasons of any event beyond the actual control of Hetta Huskies, or due to force majeure.
Canoe and Kayak rentals need to normally be picked up from our farmstead although we occassionally have kayaks available for rent from downtown Hetta (for a fee that covers the time and transfer cost of the guide travelling to town to issue and check them back in for you).
If you rent the boats to paddle a river, you are welcome to leave your vehicle on our yard for the duration of your journey.
When we are out paddling we follow our journey using apps such as rewindr or jajhtikartta or karttaselain but local trail maps can also be found on 'ULKO' and we have a few rivers outlined on our own app which you can access through this link: https://overwrought-day-8647.glideapp.io/
# RANGE OF BOATS etc AVAILABLE
FYI: We have information about our full range of boats on our website but we cannot always guarantee a specific brand.
# MAINTENANCE, TUNING AND RESPONSIBILITY
The customer should agree that he/she will return the equipment in the same good condition as when received, ordinary wear and tear accepted, and to repair and replace lost or stolen, damaged or broken skis or to reimburse Hetta Huskies for said equipment. Therefore regardless of the party at fault, customer understands and agrees to be responsible for the theft or damage to said equipment.
The boats will have been professionally checked and deemed fit for function prior to your arrival. (They will also have been wiped down with alcohol solution before and after each use as part of our Covid-19 health and safety measures.)
Nevertheless, recipients should check their condition and bring any deficiencies / scratches that they notice to the attention of a company representative upon receipt of the item (much like with a standard car hire).
We (Hetta Huskies) will cover the cost of damages due to equipment failures beyond the renters control; i.e. damage occurred during transport by Hetta Huskies or as a direct result of worn parts. However, we are not responsible for damage caused by mis-reading water and getting pinned against rocks / damage incurred when portaging etc. In other words, we do not accept responsibility for damage beyond the control of Hetta Huskies, resultant of user misuse or neglect.
If you are undertaking a longer tour we strongly recommend that you have some river reading skills and know-how.
We will endeavour to have an experienced staff member present when you check your equipment back in but if we are in the middle of, for instance, feeding the dogs, this might not be possible and the person taking the skis back from you might not be able to immediately identify any issues. If you HAVE had problems, please highlight them at the time since it is much easier for everyone to be able to sort things out immediately rather than having to chase you for problems identified in the post- use tune up which might even be delayed for a few days if there is no immediate demand.
# SUBLEASING PROHIBITED
Customer understands and agrees that any subleasing of rental equipment is prohibited and that any such sublease shall immediately cause termination and cancellation of this contract.
# 2-day + rentals
For 2-day+ rentals we may require a damage deposit in the form of credit card charge plus the driver’s license / photo ID of one member of the party.
Any deposit given by the customer shall be applied to the balance and guarantee the faithful performance of all the provisions of this agreement and all repairs necessary to said equipment. If any action is brought to enforce any of the terms of conditions of this agreement, or to recover any sums due to hereunder, the customer agrees to pay all legal fees, court costs, or other expenses.
# CUSTOMER LIABILITY & LIABILITY REDUCTION OPTIONS
# Partial Damage Waiver Option (Per Item)
Using the equipment in the way that it is designed should not result in damages.
Whilst the customer shall assume liability for any and all damage to, or loss of, to personal property and accident / injury to other persons related to said rental equipment, Hetta Huskies can provide - at an extra cost - a partial damage waiver policy which can reduce your liability so that you only start to cover costs incurred because of damage, loss or theft over a certain base fee.
This waiver can be purchased for €10/item/day (aka against your boat or against your paddles etc) which reduces the first €100 of any liability you may incur against the item specified. Alternatively, you can purchase a boat + accessories waiver, which covers both items + any additional items you have rented as part of your rental package (the boat and its spraydeck (if applicable), buoyancy aids, dry bags, paddles, throwlines etc), @ €25/day.
FYI: Damage Waiver is not insurance, is optional and is not required in order to rent an item from us - it simply lowers your deductible in case of issue and therefore brings peace of mind in case of simple accidental breakages.
If you purchase DW we agree, subject to the actions that invalidate DW listed on the rental agreement, to contractually waive your responsibility for part of the cost of damage to, or loss of, or theft of, the item in question to the limit specified.
This damage waiver contract DOES NOT cover intentional or negligent (eg dragging boats / dropping bikes down onto derraileurs etc) damage.
# Partial Damage Waiver Package Option (Per Item + its standard accessories)
Our standard Partial Damage Waiver Option provides a responsibility reduction for a specific item of equipment. However most of the equipment rentals come with accessories (bikes may come with paniers, racks, helmets, pumps, repair kits etc; skis come with ski poles, boots and boats with paddles, flotation vests, throwlines etc). If you choose the partial damage waiver package option, this covers you for the main item being rented and each individual item that may suffer damage, up to €100 in value.
In other words for a cost of €25/ day, you can reduce your liability under €100 to zero against damage to, or loss of, any of the items and their standard accessories rented at the same time (skis, ski poles, boots, pulk, towbars). In other words, €25/ day reduces liability under €100 to zero in case of any damage to, or loss of, skis and any linked accessories
# Insurance against a requested location pick-up charge
Whilst we will, of course, pick up safari clients up from any accessible location in an emergency situation, clients sometimes simply conclude that the journey they have undertaken is too strenuous for them and request a pick-up just because they do not wish to continue. This type of situation is not covered by our emergency rescue plan and in such a situation, we bill for the transfer cost and time.
Similarly, clients who have hired boats or bikes or skis from us might also decided that their intended route was more challenging than expected and hope to be bailed out. Or they may have mechanical issues that they cannot deal with themselves which they believe necessitates a pick-up.
Whilst we will always endeavour to pick someone up, there is still a transfer and time cost that should be compensated unless this insurance is selected.
# Personal Travel Insurance Recommendation
We strongly recommend that you always carry a personal accident or travel insurance policy so that you can make a claim against it in case of higher damage costs / loss / theft or even reservation cancellation (since we have a no-refund policy against e-fat reservation cancellations).
In case of theft a formal Police Report must be lodged and a copy must be forwarded to us in order to activate the insurance. In case of damage which you have had repaired during the period of rental, a photo must be provided to us.
