Our courses are often described as challenging, exciting and heaps of fun! This course is designed for Beginner to Intermediate paddlers. We can even put an expert through their paces! This course has been described as a true experience!
Our popular two day course is designed to give you the fundamental skills necessary to start sea kayaking safely on protected waters and to attain your Paddle Australia Basic Skills Award.
With its mix of paddle skills, half day guided paddle* and theoretical knowledge it is a great weekend's experience. Our Instructor/Student ratio is a maximum of 1:6, so you are assured of first class tuition and service.
THE SEA STARTER COURSE HIGHLIGHTS AND OUTCOMES:
Sea Starter Courses are held monthly at our Training & Hire Centre at 37 Jetty Road Sandringham over two days: Saturday and Sunday.
**Day 1**
- Understanding kayak design and performance
- Choosing the right kayak for you
- Kayak clothing and safety gear
- Effects of tides and wind
- Efficient forward paddling
- Efficient methods of turning and steering your kayak
- Stopping, reversing and going sideways
- Edging and leaning
- Wet exits and re-entry
**Day 2**
- Review & revise
- Guided half day paddle*
- Self- and assisted- rescues
- Towing methods
- Low support stroke
- Principles of Kayak Rolling (C-C motion / hip flick)
- Group management skills
- Trip planning and trip ideas

Children aged 7-14 years - must paddle a double sea kayak with an adult
Children under 7 years old - we request that you contact is to book Private Tuition for your family adventure
Unable to spend a full weekend? This course is available as one full day Private Tuition, one-on-one instruction at the same price - this will usually be midweek but some weekend days possible earlier or later in the season. Contact us to discuss your preferred dates.

**Clothing**
- Thermals, fleece top, board shorts / thermal long pants (depending on conditions),
- Footwear (can be old runners, but not thongs, sandals or crocs)
- Light rain jacket (summer and winter)
- Sun glasses with retainer and hat are a must!
- Wetsuits are a good idea in the colder months (we have some you can use 0 sleeveless are best
- Spare thermals & raincoat are useful when off the water.

Most of these items are available to purchase at our [Kayak Shop](https://kayakshopaustralia.com.au/kayak-clothing/) - you can click & collect on the day. Allow time to try clothing on so that you have the correct size.
**Meet** at our Training Centre at The Kayak Shop, 37 Jetty Road Sandringham at 8:30am for a 9:00am start.
**Parking** - a parking fee applies in all car parks. Free if you have a Bayside Council Beach Parking Permit. If you wish to park for free, arrive early and drop off your personal belongings at the training centre and park your car in Arthur Street, which runs parallel with Beach Road, a short 10 min walk back.
**Lunch** - bring a cut lunch or splash out at the cafe next door - they do a great burger!
