When you come out with us and the air temperatures are in the 70s or warmer, water clarity can sometimes be more limited occasionally less than six feet of visibility. As the Gulf of Mexico warms above about 68 degrees, many of the migratory manatees that gather here in the winter begin to disperse back into the Gulf. During those warmer stretches, we’re typically swimming with the resident manatees that live in Kings Bay year-round rather than the large winter crowds.
It’s also important to understand that “manatee season” on the calendar doesn’t automatically mean manatees will be everywhere. The biggest aggregations are driven by cold fronts, not just the time of year. When strong cold weather drops water temperatures, manatees push into the springs for consistent 72-degree refuge. When conditions are mild, they spread out through the bay and surrounding waters
