Thank you for registering for SEAWISE | Introduction to Coastal Kayaking! We’re excited to have you join us for a fun, challenging, and rewarding weekend on the water. This two-day course is designed to help you build confidence and competence in dynamic coastal environments, with hands-on instruction, skill progression, and a full-day journey on Day 2.
We'll meet at Freshwater Bay Boat Ramp, Port Angeles, WA. Please plan to arrive by 8:45 AM on Day 1 for a 9:00 AM start. Day 2 will begin at 9:00 AM and run until approximately 5:00 PM, as we’ll be completing a longer coastal paddle.
A dry suit is required, and participants should bring a properly outfitted sea kayak, PFD, paddle, spray skirt, bilge pump, paddle float, tow system, and all personal gear for two full days on the water. You can find the full gear checklist and health & safety notes [here/link]. If you need to rent gear, please note that all rentals—including kayaks, dry suits, and helmets—must be picked up and returned at our Port Gamble location. Instructors are not responsible for transporting gear to or from the course site.
We’ll send a final reminder with weather updates and any last-minute details a few days before the course. In the meantime, if you have any questions or need help with rentals, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at programs@olympicoutdoorcenter.com or 360-297-4659.
We’re looking forward to a great weekend of learning, paddling, and exploring the coastline together!
Best,
The Olympic Outdoor Center Team

Important Information
Your safety is our top priority. Please review the following health and safety guidelines before participating in this course:
##Cold Water & Immersion Risk
- This course takes place in cold, open coastal waters. A drysuit is required for all participants to ensure thermal protection during skill drills and rescues.
- Participants must be comfortable performing a wet exit and re-entering their kayak with assistance or independently.
##Physical Requirements
- You should be in good physical health, capable of paddling for multiple hours, lifting and carrying your own kayak (with assistance if needed), and spending extended time outdoors in variable conditions.
- If you have medical concerns, prior injuries, or health conditions that could impact your participation, please consult your healthcare provider and notify us prior to the course.
##Emergency Preparedness
- Instructors carry first aid kits, communication devices (VHF, phone), and are trained in CPR and rescue protocols.
- Participants are encouraged to carry personal medications (e.g. inhalers, EpiPens) in a dry bag on their person—not stored in a hatch.
- You’ll be briefed on the emergency plan, including landing zones and communication protocols, before launching.
##Weather & Environmental Hazards
- Coastal environments are dynamic. Be prepared for sun, wind, rain, waves, and cold air/water temps.
- Bring layered, non-cotton clothing and sufficient hydration and nutrition for each day.
- Be alert for signs of hypothermia, dehydration, or fatigue—and communicate with your instructors if you feel unwell or unsafe at any time.
##Safety Culture
- This course emphasizes good judgment, teamwork, and proactive communication. You’re encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and support fellow paddlers.
- Respect the ocean and your limits. Progression comes from challenge—not from pushing through discomfort or unsafe conditions.
