About Your Lesson

Surfing in Maui? Yeah, you’re in the right place. Between the island’s unreal beauty and waves for every skill level—first-timer to pro—there’s no better spot to paddle out.

Learn from Maui Locals Who Live This
Private lesson, duo, or group session (3+ people)? No matter what you book, you’re getting top-tier coaching from instructors who actually know these waters. For bigger groups (5+), we bring in a second pro to keep the stoke high. Even if you’re already ripping, we’ll help you dial in your technique and find the best breaks for the day’s conditions. (Spoiler: We surf here daily—we’ve got the inside scoop.)

All Skill Levels Welcome

Never touched a board? We’ll have you standing by the end of your first lesson. Seriously, age and experience don’t matter—we’ve taught everyone from kids to grandparents. Your lesson includes everything you need: board, reef shoes, and a rash guard (trust us, you’ll want both). So what’s stopping you? Let’s get you riding Maui’s waves like a local.

Safety First, Stoke Always

We’re all about progression, but your safety is our #1 priority. After years of teaching and surfing these breaks, we know exactly how to challenge you *without* pushing too far. Our goal? Get you hooked on the rush (fair warning: surfing is addictive) while keeping it fun and safe.

And yeah, if you live nowhere near an ocean… we apologize in advance for the obsession you’re about to develop.

Important Information

🛟 Your Safety Comes First

Every lesson begins on land with instruction covering ocean awareness, paddling, board control, popping up, proper stance and safe surfing practices.

👂 Please follow your instructor’s directions at all times. Instructors may adjust the location, lesson format or time in the water when necessary for safety.

🚫 Never dive headfirst off your surfboard or ride a wave all the way onto the beach. Follow your instructor’s directions for safely ending each ride before reaching shallow water.

👥 We maintain a maximum ratio of four students per instructor. Groups of five or more receive additional instructors at no extra charge to maintain this ratio.

🏄 Surfing is a physical ocean activity. Please tell us before your lesson about any medical conditions, recent injuries, mobility concerns or limited swimming ability.

🧠 Surfer’s Myelopathy Awareness

Surfer’s myelopathy is a rare, non-traumatic spinal cord injury reported most often in first-time or beginner surfers. It is thought to be associated with prolonged or sudden arching of the lower back.

When resting, sit upright on your board rather than keeping your lower back arched for long periods.

🚨 Stop surfing and immediately notify your instructor if you experience unusual lower-back or leg pain, leg weakness, numbness, loss of balance or difficulty walking. These symptoms may be a medical emergency—call 911 immediately.

🌊 Ocean conditions can change quickly. Local Pros Maui reserves the right to relocate, reschedule or cancel a lesson when conditions are considered unsafe.
