Great War Island Kayak Tour – Discover the Wild Side of Belgrade

When people think of Belgrade, they often imagine historic fortresses, lively cafés, busy streets, and vibrant nightlife. But just minutes from the city center lies a completely different side of the Serbian capital.

Welcome to Great War Island (Veliko Ratno Ostrvo), a protected natural area located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers.

Often called the lungs of Belgrade, Great War Island offers a peaceful escape from the city. Surrounded by forests, calm waterways, and wildlife, the island provides a unique opportunity to experience Belgrade from the water.

Why Visit Great War Island?

Although it is located in the heart of a European capital, Great War Island remains uninhabited and largely untouched. The island is an important natural habitat and home to a wide variety of wildlife.

During the kayak tour, you may have the chance to see more than 100 species of birds, beavers, otters, nutria, and wild boars.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the area because it allows you to move quietly through the water without disturbing the natural surroundings.

Your Adventure Begins in Zemun

The tour starts at our Kayak Center at:

Kej Oslobođenja 11a, Zemun

Before entering the water, you'll receive all the equipment you need for the adventure.

Included:

• Single or tandem kayak
• Paddle
• Certified life jacket
• Waterproof dry bag for your phone and valuables

Secure lockers are also available for your personal belongings.

Our kayak center also has changing rooms, restrooms, lockers, and outdoor showers during the summer season.

No Experience? No Problem.

No previous kayaking experience is required.

Before the tour begins, your guide will provide a short safety briefing and explain the basics of kayaking. You'll learn how to hold and use the paddle, steer the kayak, and follow the basic safety rules.

The introduction is suitable for complete beginners, and you'll have time to get comfortable on the water before continuing with the tour.

Paddle Toward Lido Beach

After launching from Zemun, we paddle toward Lido Beach, located at the northern tip of Great War Island.

During the paddle, you'll enjoy views of historic Zemun, Gardoš Tower, the riverside, traditional boats, and the green shoreline of the island.

The combination of the city skyline and untouched nature creates a unique atmosphere that is best experienced from the water.

The Confluence of the Sava and Danube

One of the highlights of the tour is reaching the area where the Sava River flows into the Danube.

This spectacular meeting point of two major European rivers has played an important role in the history of Belgrade for more than two thousand years.

From your kayak, you'll have panoramic views of Kalemegdan Fortress, New Belgrade, Zemun, Great War Island, and the surrounding rivers.

Paddle Along the Wild Shoreline

As we continue around Great War Island, the atmosphere becomes quieter and more natural.

Instead of traffic and city noise, you'll hear birds and the sound of the water as you paddle along the island's wild shoreline.

Every season brings a different experience.

In spring, migrating birds return and the island becomes full of life.

In summer, the warm weather and lush vegetation create ideal conditions for spending time on the water, with the possibility of a swim at Lido Beach.

In autumn, the changing colors of the forest create beautiful reflections across the river.

Kalemegdan Fortress from the Water

One of the most memorable parts of the experience is seeing Kalemegdan Fortress from the water.

The fortress has stood above the confluence for centuries and played an important role in Belgrade's history.

Viewing it from a kayak offers a completely different perspective and provides excellent opportunities for photographs.

Optional Swim at Lido Beach

Depending on weather and water conditions, we may make a short stop at Lido Beach.

If the group wishes, you can take a swim in the Danube, relax on the beach, or simply enjoy the surroundings before continuing.

If you prefer to keep paddling, we can continue without a swimming stop.

The tour is designed to have a relaxed and enjoyable pace.
